This tour starts from either Kisoro in Uganda or Kigali in Rwanda and takes you to the lush forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks are part of the Virunga Conservation Area, home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Itinerary
Early Morning: Departure from Kisoro or Kigali
Kisoro Departure
At 4:00a.m meet your guide and begin the drive from Kisoro to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The drive takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on the specific starting point and traffic conditions. At 5:30am arrive at the park headquarters for a briefing. Here, you will be assigned a gorilla family to track and receive important information about the trek.
Kigali Departure
The tour can also start from Kigali in Rwanda. This will require waking up very early in the morning (3:00 am) to start the 3 hour journey to Bwindi Pick-up from your hotel in Kigali. At 6:00am Cross the border into Uganda and continue to the park headquarters, which is about a 1-hour drive from the border. At 7:30 am Arrive at the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing and assignment of the gorilla family.
Morning: Gorilla Trekking Adventure
Begin 8:00am the trek into the forest in search of the mountain gorillas. The trekking duration can vary from 1 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. The trek can be challenging, involving hiking through dense vegetation and steep terrain, but the reward is unparalleled. Mid-Morning to Early Afternoon Upon encountering the gorillas, spend an unforgettable hour observing their behaviors, interactions, and unique personalities. This experience offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these endangered creatures in their natural setting.
Afternoon: Return Trek and Departure
After the one-hour encounter, trek back to the park headquarters. The descent is usually quicker and allows for additional opportunities to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Arrive back at the headquarters at 1:00pm. Receive a certificate for your participation in the gorilla trek and have a moment to reflect on the incredible experience. At 1:30 pm enjoy a packed lunch or a meal at a nearby lodge, and take some time to relax.
Late Afternoon: Drive Back to Kisoro or Kigali
Return to Kisoro
At 2:30pm depart from the park headquarters and drive back to Kisoro and arrive 4:00pm in Kisoro, where your guide will drop you off at your hotel or a designated location.
Return to Kigali
At 2:30pm begin the journey back to Kigali, crossing the border and continuing through the scenic landscapes of Rwanda. At 5:30pm Arrive in Kigali and be dropped off at your hotel or another preferred location in the city.
